Timeline: Local Events with National Significance

The history of the slavery and the abolitionist movement inthe United States is punctuated with key events at both the local and national levels.  Philadelphia, as a major Northern city and destination for migrants from the South, was central to the development of African-American culture and commerce.  The city became a stronghold for the abolitionist movement and a stop on the Underground Railroad due to the work of William Still and many of his contemporaries.  In these timelines, key events in the lives of William Still and his daughter Caroline Still Wiley Anderson are highlighted alongside some of the most important historical details in African-American history of their times.
