Negro Spirituals

Supplemental resource for Lesson Plan - William Still and the Underground Railroad

Negro spirituals were created and sung by enslaved Africans.  The songs are very beautiful and contain coded messages used by enslaved Africans to convey hidden signals for escaping, hiding and expressing danger as well as discontent with slavery.

(4) Follow the Drinking Gourd

When the sun comes back,

and the first Quail calls,

Follow the drinking gourd,

For the old man is waiting

for to carry you to freedom

If you follow the drinking gourd.

Follow the drinking gourd,

Follow the drinking gourd,

For the old man is waiting

for to carry you to freedom

If you follow the drinking gourd.

The riverbank will make a very good road,

The dead trees show you the way.

Left foot, peg foot traveling on,

Following the drinking gourd.

The river ends between two hills,

Follow the drinking gourd,

There's another river on the other side,

Follow the drinking gourd.

When the great big river meets the little river,

Follow the drinking gourd.

For the old man is waiting

for to carry you to freedom

If you follow the drinking gourd.

Coming for to carry me home

Swing low, sweet chariot,

Coming for to carry me home

Coming for to carry me home?

A band of angels coming after me

Coming for to carry me home

If you get there before I do

Coming for to carry me home

But still my soul feels heavenly bound

[Chorus:]

Wade in the water, wade in the water children

Long way from my home

Sometimes I wish I could fly

Like a bird up in the sky

Sometimes I wish I could fly

Like a bird up in the sky

Closer to my home

Motherless children have such a hard time

Motherless children have-a such a hard time

Motherless children have such a really hard time

A long way from home

Sometimes I feel like freedom is here

Sometimes I feel like freedom is so near

But we're so far from home
