Jacob C. White, Jr., was Philadelphia's only African-American principal and teacher in 1864, when he was appointed principal of Robert Vaux Elementary School. He had also served as agent for Haitian emigration. After retiring from education, White served as chairman of the board of Frederick Douglass Hospital.
